Fernie has a rich history.

It is a town of many stories and another one of my favourites is the Legend of the Ghostrider. In the late 1800s, William Fernie, a prospector noticed the Chief’s daughter wearing a necklace of shiny black stones that he recognized as coal. When he asked for the source, the chief agreed to show him on the condition that he marry his daughter. The Chief disclosed the location of the source, however, William Fernie refused to marry his daughter, and so the Chief placed a curse on the town. When the sun hits it just right, to remind the townsfolks of this curse, the shadow of the Ghostrider (the Chief riding a horse) appears in Mount Hosmer. *

For years, I tried to spy the Ghostrider’s shadow, but I could never see him, until one glorious evening walk with my dog, the sun was hitting Mount Hosmer just so, and I happened to look up. There he was, riding toward me…a beautiful curse.  He was so clear. I couldn’t understand how I was never able to see him before. Now on those sunny evenings, I can’t unsee him. The prominent shadow makes me pause and reflect on the relationships between the First Nations people and the Prospectors of the times, and how the Valley has evolved over the years to become a place that I now call home.
